Castelnuovo is the capital and heart of green Garfagnana and forms the northern part of the Serchio Valley, nestled between the Apuan and Appennine mountain ranges.
From Castelnuovo there are many excursion destinations: Hiking trails that can be explored on foot, horseback or mountain bike, while the town offers everything from swimming to tennis, football and athletics.
A major tourist attraction and meeting point for the entire population of Garfagnana is the old market, which dates back to medieval times. In this market it was possible to buy, sell and exchange goods for the local producer or farmer. It is held every Thursday morning in the streets and squares of the old town.

The Garfagnana Valley is rightly famous for its prosciutto, pork, pecorino cheese and honey. There are some great restaurants where you can sample local specialties in a true Tuscan atmosphere.
